The holidays can be a wonderful time of year, but for individuals in addiction recovery, they can also bring anxiety, loneliness, family conflict, and unexpected triggers. Whether you’re celebrating Thanksgiving, Christmas, or New Year’s in San Diego, having a daily sobriety plan can make a meaningful difference.
The best time to prepare for a difficult moment is before that moment arrives.
1. Start Your Morning With Recovery
Before checking your phone, attending family gatherings, or making holiday plans, dedicate time to your recovery. Read recovery literature, pray or meditate if that is part of your practice, call your sponsor, or attend an Alcoholics Anonymous meeting.
Starting your day with recovery helps establish your priorities before the distractions begin.
2. Schedule a Recovery Meeting
Don’t leave your meeting attendance to chance. San Diego has an established AA community, and both in-person and online meeting options can help individuals stay connected throughout the holiday season.
Visit the San Diego AA Central Office to look for meeting information. Confirm holiday schedules before attending.
3. Identify Your Triggers Before Leaving Home
Consider where you’re going, who you’ll see, and what emotions might arise. Family disagreements, financial pressure, and memories of previous holidays can create stress.
Recognizing potential triggers allows you to prepare healthy responses.
4. Have an Exit Strategy
If you’re attending a holiday gathering, arrange your own transportation when possible. Set a departure time and give yourself permission to leave early.
Your recovery is more important than staying at a gathering where you feel unsafe or overwhelmed.
5. End Your Day With Accountability
Before going to bed, reflect on your day. What went well? What was difficult? Did you reach out for support when you needed it?
A brief conversation with your sponsor or another trusted person can help you process difficult emotions and prepare for tomorrow.
Staying Sober One Day at a Time
You don’t have to navigate the entire holiday season today. Focus on the next 24 hours.
At New Focus Recovery, we recognize that lasting recovery is supported by healthy routines, accountability, and meaningful connections.
This holiday season, give yourself the gift of preparation. One day at a time.
